The museum is one of the oldest museums in southwest Moravia. It was founded in 1886 mainly thanks to Jaroslav Janoušek a professor at the "Higher Regional School" in Telč. His important assistant and collaborator was Jan Beringer a colleague from the "real school". From 1897 he collaborated with the museum of the Museum Association in Telč which was founded on the initiative of the director of the "real school" Karel Jaroslav Maška a world-famous paleontologist and archaeologist. An important administrator of the museum's collections was also Jan Tiray the author of several volumes of Moravian Homeland Studies. The intention was to create not only a documentation but also a regional patriotic and educational center in southwestern Moravia. That worked at the time. Later the museum fulfilled the role of collection and presentation.
